Sharing non-network
printers over a network-Windows 95, 98
By Jacque Murry and Tony Mitchell
v Go to the primary
computer (the one physically attached to the non-network printer) and do the
following:
1. Be sure you are logged onto the network such that you can see the Network Neighborhood and My Computer on your desktop
2. Test the printer on this
computer that is physically attached to the printer, to be sure it is presently
printing to the printer you are about to share. Remember it must have the
printer drivers or software for the particular printer attached to it, to work.
3. Open the "My
Computer" icon on the desktop and open the Printers folder
4. Right click on the printer you
are using, and are about to share, and select Sharing.
5. Share the printer, named according
to the teachers name: example SmithHP
6. Right click on Network
Neighborhood and click on Properties
7. Look in the Configuration tab
and make sure "client for Microsoft Networks" is there. If it is not,
add it (if you don't know how, that is another lesson)
8. If Microsoft Networks is
there, look lower in the window, below the configuration list, and click on the
"File and Print Sharing" button.
9. Inside the next window that
opens, put a check in the box that reads "I want to share my
printer".
10. Restart this primary computer
11. When the computer is
operational again, again right click on Network Neighborhood and choose
properties.
12. This time choose the
Identification tab
13. Name your
computer/printer: example: you may want
to name the computer Smith1, and the printer SmithHP (if you were not already
able to do that)
14. Name the Workgroup with the
teachers last name: example Smith (this
is very important)
15. This computer should now show
up when the NN (Network Neighborhood)
v Next go to the secondary computers (the ones in your room, not actually attached to the printer, but on the network in your building)and do the following:
1. Right click on NN (Network
Neighborhood ) and choose properties
2. In the configuration tab make
sure Microsoft Networks is there (if not, install it)
3. Click on the Identification
tab
4. Name this computer Smith2 (no two computers on a network can have the
same name)
5. Make the workgroup Smith
(obviously use the teacher's name who teaches in that room)
6. Close NN windows
7. Restart the computer
8. Once the computer is
operational again, put the printer driver software Cd into the CD ROM drive
(The printer drivers, or software, for the printer we are sharing, must be
loaded on each and every computer we desire to print from)
9. Open My Computer, Printers,
and double click on Add Printer
10. You will need to install the
software from the Cd, by clicking on "Have Disk" when prompted
11. During installation choose and
bubble in "Network Printer"
12. Bubble in Yes next to the MS
DOS based printing
13. Click on Browse button at the
top of the window
14. Click on Smith1 and then
SmithHP
15. Click on Next, Next, Next, Yes
as windows default printer
