Getting Started

Ø      Top left side: “Start from Design” - (the key to driving this car)

Ø      Three choices on dropdown menu; list below and pictures on right side correlate with dropdown menu choice

o       Publication Type : various templates for newsletters, calendars, letters, resumes, flyers, greeting cards, business cards, even web pages

o       Design Type: all of the templates in same format or design (same colors, shapes, graphics, etc)

o       Blank Publications: shows you paper shape of what you are making.

Use this to start from scratch

 

Preview

Ø      Make sure “By Publication Type” is selected in dropdown menu box (top left-hand side) and then click on “Quick Publication” just below those words

Ø      Use the scroll bar on the far right side to scroll down and view the many templates in “Quick Publications”

Ø      Now select “Newsletter” from the dropdown menu list and view the various templates

Ø      Click once on the first newsletter template, “Accent Box” and notice:

o       A wizard will pop up to try to help save you some time by putting in previous entered information

o       Click Ok, then cancel

o       In your room, on a computer only you use, it would be a timesaver to fill in this information

o       Page buttons at bottom of page, just above task bar: 1, 2, 3, 4

o       Click on each one of the pages

o       You can also delete a page: under Edit menu, Delete page (selected)

Ø      Use the close command beneath the File menu to close each document; otherwise you will have a multitude of documents open as we explore

Ø      Window menu will show all open documents

 

Navigation and Control

Ø      Arrows at the top of the “Task Pane”

Ø      Scroll bars

Ø      Zoom in and out and percentage of view

Ø      Grab bar and moving various toolbars

o       Find double arrows pointing right; dropdown menu lets you choose to show buttons on one row or two

o       Hover over ridges to get cross hairs

o       Drag and drop

Ø      Tool bar control under “View” menu: you’ll need to see the Task Pane

Ø      Click back (left) arrow at top of task pane; then select Newsletter again, and let’s view another newsletter: Choose Axis

Ø      Inside left task pane notice various commands:

o       Page Content: let’s you determine number of columns for newsletter

o       Page Design: let’s you change background and overall design even after you have begun work

o       Color Schemes: allows for more color choices

o       Font Schemes: allows control over font choices

Ø      From Format menu choose background

o       Choose a color and apply to pages (a popup dropdown menu will appear)

o       Note: Color printing is expensive, but this newsletter can also be saved as a newsletter for display on your web page

Ø      As in Word and PowerPoint, the most important tool in Publisher is the Edit / Undo arrows above the B (bold) icon

Ø      To get back to the window we started with, use the dropdown menu at the top of the task pane and choose New Publication and click on a sub-heading such as newsletter

Ø      We will come back here shortly to let you browse for awhile

 

Other Two Choices: Design Type and Blank

Ø      Design Type

o       Same stuff as in Presentation Type

o       Only sorted by design rather than by format

o       Allows for keeping the same theme for all publications

Ø      Blank Presentations

o       Shows a graphical representation of what you are creating

o       Indicates number of pages and fold marks

o       Show my example printouts (side fold is the I think of for a card)

 

Hands-on Practice with Awards

Ø      From Publication Type, choose Awards Certificates

Ø      Choose “Great Idea” certificate

Ø      Adjust color scheme using that choice in task pane (desert was original)

Ø      Practice closing and reopening task pane so you can see more of the certificate as you are working

Ø      Zoom in to add, change, or delete text or text boxes (you can type in any number)

Ø      Uh oh!!: remember that the little arrow on the tool bar, next to the broom, will Un-Do multiple steps; just keep clicking it until it looks like it did before you goofedJ

Ø      Click on various fields or objects on the certificate document

o       Moving van to move text box (arrow keys can be used to if the text box is properly selected)

o       Green circle to rotate text box

Ø      Other adjustments

o       Text: select some text and click A on shortcut bar

o       Use fill tool (bucket) to color text background

o       Text boxes can be moved or resized: handles and moving van

o       More text box formatting available by double clicking on selected text box border

o       In the Format Text Box window click on the Color and Lines tab, the click on the dropdown menu next to Color and choose Fill Affects and two colors…………I’ll demo (gradient colors)

 

More Cool Stuff

Ø      Flipping a graphic: select, arrange menu, rotate or flip, choices

Ø      Remember undo goes way…………… back; arrow next to broom on shortcut toolbar

Ø      Format Painter – demo (little whisk broom on toolbar)

Ø      Creating Posters

o       For large wall posters

o       Choose File, New, Blank Publication, and Poster

o       Go to Page Setup and discuss particulars

·        Prior to starting work

·        Only paper is turned – landscape, portrait

·        Notice custom sizing choices (29 x 22 looks good)

o       Add and enlarge graphics (perhaps St. Patrick’s Day graphic)

o       Demo and discuss importance of Print Preview (paper alignment)

Ø      Screenshot pasting

o       Great for “Lifting” graphics that do not allow copying or saving as file

o       Demo making Programs list screenshot / poster

o       Change Page Setup and remember crop tool (Picture Toolbar)

 

More Hands-on Practice

Ø      Close Awards Certificate document: File , close, don’t save changes

Ø      From “Start from Design” choose Invitation cards and Christmas Angel….

Ø      Select and enlarge angel and move upward; use arrow keys to center

Ø      Select bottom text box and move downward; two clicks selects the text box object

Ø      Insert picture, WordArt

o       Choose top row, fourth from left / text should read Merry Christmas

o       Move to center, below angel, above text box

o       Adjust size of object to fit

o       From the WordArt toolbar click on the fill tool and choose red as fill color

o       Edit text box information to suit you

o       Close this document and either save to your folder or don’t save

Ø      Another practice document

o       Click back arrow until you see “Start from Design” menu

o       Choose Blank Publications and “Postcard”

o       Insert picture / AutoShapes / stars and banners (one of the bottom ones) / then draw banner on page

o       Insert text box that reads: From Tony (your name) from Hawaii (or Las Vegas, etc) (You will probably need to Zoom in; I did)

o       To get rid of an object, right click on it and choose “Delete Object”

o       Add another graphic or two denoting the place from where your postcard is being sent

Ø      One more hands-on activity

o       Independent practice

o       Create a business card for yourself

o       Inform group: there is printing paper especially designed for business cards (Office Depot)

o       Show the group my example
