Changing Proxy Settings Between Home and School

At school, your internet activity is filtered through another computer in the building, for a number of reasons. When you are at school, your computer has to use this proxy server to access the internet. However, when you go home and plug into your home network, unless you make certain changes, your computer continues to search for the proxy server and cannot access the internet because you don’t have a proxy server in you home. Make the changes below to use your laptop at home.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu choose Internet Options
  3. Several tabs appear in the top of this window. Select the Connections tab
  4. At the bottom of the Connections window, click on the button that reads LAN Settings
  5. In the next window you will put a check in Automatically Detect Settings when you are at home (and take the check out of Use Proxy Server)
  6. When at school, you must put the check back in the Use Proxy Server box
