Last update: November 2007 Have trained RIV DTN DVD
Overview:
This
class is designed to help you use video clips, already correlated and aligned
with Georgia QCC objectives, and PowerPoint, to teach your classroom
curriculum. Imagine being able to create a multimedia
lesson in minutes, that include video clips demonstrating the concept you are
trying to convey to your students. We will learn how to access PeachStar and download video clips pertinent to your
curriculum. We will learn some basic steps in creating a PowerPoint slideshow.
Finally we will learn how to incorporate the video clips into a multimedia
lesson plan for you to present to your students.
Prior:
Ø Place some video clips
on a shared drive for practice inserting into PPT
Ø Be sure to have
external speakers to hear videos
Ø Be sure PowerPoint is
installed on the computers I plan to use
Ø Remember this works
with AppleWorks 6 also
Ø Check to be sure PeachStar download is not blocked at that school
Ø Kiosk: iMovie of “Little Girl Concepts” to demonstrate how
powerful video clips can be
Ø Remember that if IE is
not default, the method for getting it to ask is in Tools, Internet options,
Programs tab……… toward bottom
Resource
Preparation
Ø Several example video
lessons on teacher station for demo
Ø Video segments set
needs to be accessible to my students to copy to their computer and then work
with me to add to PPT
Introductory remarks
Ø Parking and the doors
Ø Restrooms
Ø Cell phones
Ø If you are late or
leave early, please note time on sign in sheet
Ø My history………. Year
experience, grades, children, marriage
Ø My GOAL for today:
Ø Help you appreciate
all of the possibilities of this wonderful tool
Ø Inspire you to try
some new stuff with computers
Ø Apology for
varying levels of proficiency
Notes & advice
Ø Give out handout
Ø Listen and record the
name or phrase for what you want to do, so you can search for details later (if
you write every detail now, you won’t be able to keep up and we will all get
frustrated)
Ø Take a break when you
need to; no formal ones
Ø Lunch 11:30 – 12:30
(I’ll let you in back)
Ø If you brought a flash
drive, save all work there
OVERVIEW
Ø A few introductory
comments
Ø Get a vision (viewing
examples on big screen)
Ø Watch the process as I
demo (we will do together later)
·
Finding
the video you want
·
Downloading
the video you find
·
One big reason
for using my method is to prevent streaming
Ø Setting up an account
Ø Guided practice of
finding and downloading
Ø View as videos are
plugged into PowerPoint
Ø Guided practice
inserting videos
Ø Independent practice –
finding, downloading, and inserting video into PPT
Ø Burning PPT work to CD
Intro and
comments
Ø Video can be a
powerful teaching tool
Ø Their world
Ø Various learning
modalities
Ø Must be used correctly
and correlated to GPS
Get a
VISION - Brief look
at my examples: (SELL IDEA)
Ø Show demos of what we
will be making (must use CD)
Ø They are on my temp
storage data transfer cdrw cd
Ø View:
·
Safety
and Health
·
Solar
system
·
Number
patters
·
Erica’s
video lesson
·
Shakespere
·
Eight
parts of speech

Step ONE
WATCH FOR NOW: Locating an educational
video that meets your needs
Ø Getting to the site
and signing in:
o Perhaps use Firefox –
it seems to work and I can enlarge text
o Go to http://www.gpb.org/public/education/programs.jsp
and click on the Video Streaming link on the right, middle of the page
o We will setup your
login later
§ Mine is tomitchell; f- pass
Ø Searching methods –
o Preface notes
§ Preference for
searching method depends on style and or learning method, like Kindergarteners
sorting
§ Breadcrumbs notes path
§ Notice grade level,
segments, descriptions
o demo all for locating
fractions for grade 3
o Left subject panel - Best for me
§ Panel narrows from
subject to strands
§ Look at video
description for grade levels
o Grade
level
o Standard
–
§ This is best system if
you want to copy paste standard and if you want to be sure you are only using
correlated (justifiable) videos
§ it’s helpful to know
standard number such as M3N5 for fractions
§ Related materials tab
also has standard in text so you can copy and paste into lesson plans or
PowerPoint slide as documentation
o General keyword
o Some things to notice
when searching
§ Grade level
§ Length of video
§ ADD to play-list (for
easier retrieval later)
Ø Video page
o Full Video or Video
Segments tab
o Related materials
§ Curriculum standards
§ Sometimes a teacher
guide
§ Blackline masters
o Citations
???
Ø Media settings
o Below video screen
o Mac or Windows
o Computer is not so
picky, but PowerPoint is
Step TWO: Downloading the video clips to your
computer (still
watching)
Demo
as download
Get
everyone signed up and signed into United Streaming
Ø Launch brower and go to this url: http://www.gpb.org/public/education/programs.jsp
Ø Use school
codes to get in, and then register (see school list in my folder
Ø Suggested
convention: tmitchelljns / usual password
Ø Have them
do one search and download with me
·
Standards search: health, grade 3
·
Take first, top standard with a video associated
· GR3 - GA.2. (Find videos meeting this standard)
· Health Education: Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs: Consequences: Assesses the physical, mental, and social consequences of using alcohol, tobacco products, and other drugs.
· Go through the entire process of finding and then downloading into appropriate folder
Initial Guided
– Independent practice finding and downloading videos
Step
THREE Setting
up a PowerPoint lesson
Ø Look again
at some of my sample Safety and Health to demonstrate how a PowerPoint lesson
can be better than just the videos
Ø We will
create a practice PPT with the segments I have placed on share drive as
practice so:
·
They can use my downloaded segments or if they were success
getting a few, they can use theres
·
Move movie segments from shared drive to their computer
·
Put segments in an appropriately name folder – Decimals and
Fractions
·
Say : we are pretending you have already downloaded these segments
Ø Launch
PowerPoint
Ø Make
selections about appearance (We’ll do this together; just some basics)
Ø On title
slide indicate the name of this lesson (notice my example)
Ø Go to File
and Save As and save this presentation into the same folder the video clip are
in
Ø Create a
new slide (Insert menu; we will discuss slide layout)
Ø Type in
the topic or introduction sentence for video clip
Ø Go to the
Insert menu and choose “Movies and Sounds” and then “Movies from File”
Ø Navigate
to the video clip you want to show with this slide and click OK
Ø PowerPoint
2003 lets you have video fill screen when it starts playing: right click on
video and choose Edit movie object
Ø To pause a
movie, click on it, to continue it, double click on it
Ø Longer
clips may need to be viewed again, so if you anticipate this put a hyperlink on
the next slide that reads “Replay video” and link it to the video
Ø Demo “Pen”
usage in PPT “Slideshow” view: this allows me to write on my Slideshow slides,
but any writing will not be saved to the show
Guided –
Independent practice inserting video segments into PowerPoint
Burning
(writing) video lessons to CD
Ø Why might
this be important - Keeping work safe for future
Ø Video
segments and PowerPoint file must be inside the same folder at the same level
Ø Burn the
folder containing the above mentioned files to the CD
Ø You can
then drag that folder to another computer if needed or merely play from CD
Ø Lab
computers and your teacher workstation have the necessary hardware and software
·
Nero in lab, some MTC’s have Instant CD/DVD; IBM’s have IBM Record
Now
·
Directions for Nero are in the PeachStar
folder within my folder on the shared drive
·
I will show you how to use other as you need it
Ø Use a
CD-RW data cd; this type is amendable
Ø Let’s do
it now
Helpful
Resources
Downloading
at school sites and home
Ø So far I
have checked these sites and could download movies from PeachStar:
- River Road, Dawson, Edgewood, Johnson, South Columbus, Downtown, and Britt
David
Ø Can be
done from home and might even be faster
Ø Enter text
on slide
Ø Select
text (highlight)
Ø Go to
Insert menu and choose Hyperlink
Ø In the
next window click on the top “Select” button
Ø Navigate
to the launch icon for a program or document
Ø Click OK,
then Click OK again
Sharing
your “Video Lesson”
Ø Sho vs presentation .pps or .ppt
o .sho cannot be edited; like KidPix
standalone
o Personal
issue: how much work did I put in; do I mind if someone else claims credit
Ø Clips must
accompany slideshow, and stay in the location from where they were inserted into the
slideshow
Ø Size: mine
is 34 MB; 1.2 MB for slideshow, 32 for clips
Ø Sharing
with those teachers who do not have PowerPoint on their computer
o They will
need PowerPoint player – free download from internet
o “Burning”
a CD, include PowerPoint Players
o Too large
for diskette
o Zip drive
is a possibility
Later / old references
Summer
ideas
Ø Look
through clips and view large segment to see what, if any clips you want
Ø Download
clips to your home computer in whichever format will work with your
presentation application (WMP or QT)
Ø Test your
process after you have download a few clips
Ø Burn clips
to cd
Ø Move clips
from cd to your school computer
Ø Create
your presentations
Linking
ideas and possibilities
Ø Hypertext
links can be used to launch movies in Word and AppleWorks 6
Ø Hypertext
linking can also be used as a work-around for playing a movie in PowerPoint,
when the PowerPoint movie insertion does not support the movie format
downloaded. Example: Mac PowerPoint will only play Quicktime
movies, but (IF I HAVE THE FREE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER INSTALLED ON MY MAC
COMPUTER), I can hyperlink to the movie file and launch it using another
program (WMP mentioned in parenthesis above)
Ø Quicktime and Windows Media players can be downloaded free from the
internet
